Institutions make a difference

We examine key predictors of climate policy stringency and find that: Institutions make a difference!

National climate policies often lack the necessary stringency to effectively reduce carbon emissions due to the complex interplay of political, economic, and social factors.

Using machine learning methods on data from 95 countries, we show that the most important predictors of policy stringency are of institutional nature: freedom (of press, media, associations, and elections), governmental effectiveness, and control of corruption.
